Here is a Short Brief About Dear You (给阿嬷的情书):
Dear You (给阿嬷的情书) is a heartfelt Teochew family drama inspired by true stories and historical experiences of Chinese migration to Southeast Asia. The movie beautifully explores themes of family, memories, migration, love, and cultural identity.
The story follows a grandson who sets out on a journey to Thailand in search of his long-lost grandfather. Along the way, he uncovers hidden family stories through old letters, historical records, and memories passed down through generations. What begins as a personal search slowly reveals deeper emotions, untold sacrifices, and a touching story connected to his grandmother’s past.

After Watching the Movie
After watching Dear You (给阿嬷的情书), I, together with my family, my aunt’s family and other relatives recently visited the museum and it was our first time exploring it. We truly enjoyed every moment there. The museum is full of meaningful stories and history that gave us a deeper understanding of the journeys of our great-grandparents who migrated to Malaysia.
As a Teochew, this experience felt even more meaningful. It helped me connect more deeply with the history and sacrifices of our ancestors.
What made the experience even more special was discovering that Dear You (给阿嬷的情书) is inspired by true stories, real historical documents, letters, and the experiences of Chaoshan (Teochew) people who migrated to Southeast Asia. Watching the movie and visiting the museum made everything feel more real and meaningful.
A Personal Memory
About 10 years ago, my family and my mother’s side of the family visited Shantou, China where we met our relatives and visited my great-grandfather’s house. That trip gave me my first real connection to my ancestral roots, and it makes watching Dear You and visiting the museum even more meaningful.
