As we all know, International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL) is here again! September is always a meaningful and special month for the Deaf community. It is a time to celebrate sign languages, raise awareness, and remind society about the importance of sign language in our daily lives.
Here in Malaysia, we use Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM), the sign language used by the Malaysian Deaf community. However, I feel that there is still a lack of awareness and understanding of BIM in society. Many people may not realize how important accessible communication is for Deaf people and how sign language helps us communicate, connect with others, access information, and participate equally in society.
The Deaf community has always emphasized that sign languages are important in ensuring that Deaf people can enjoy their full human rights. BIM is not simply a way of communicating; it is also an important part of our identity, culture, and everyday lives.
This September, let’s continue to raise awareness, take the opportunity to learn more about BIM, understand the Deaf community, and promote a more inclusive Malaysia where everyone can communicate, participate, and be heard.
To celebrate International Day of Sign Languages 2026, RC Deaf Missions Malaysia is proud to organize a wonderful series of special events throughout September. These activities provide opportunities for people to have fun while learning, playing, communicating, and connecting with others.
